Why have you fallen from heaven, o morning star, son of the dawn?

Why are you cut down, you who once trampled the nations?

You said in your heart: “I will ascend into heaven, I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly in the utmost heights of the north; I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.”

Instead they brought you down to the grave, to the depths of the pit!

Those who see you stare at you, examine you closely, and say, “Is this the man that made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world like a desert, destroyed the cities, and would never let his prisoners go home?”

All the kings of the nations, all of them lie in glorious state, each in his own house; but you are cast out of your tomb like a rejected branch; you are covered with the slain, with those pierced by the sword, dropped under the stones of the pit like a corpse trampled underfoot.

You will not join them in burial, because you have destroyed your land, you have killed your people; the offspring of the wicked will never be mentioned again.
