Before the cities.
Before the weapons.
Before fear learned to call itself prudence
and solitude learned to call itself strength.
Before screens took the place of windows.
There was a Garden.
It was not fragile innocence. It was balance.
Every creature had a voice.
Every voice had a place.
The stone supported.
The water remembered its way to the sea.
The tree did not ask to become a throne.
Man had not yet needed to become greater than his brother.
Father walked there.
Then other lines came.
They did not descend from heaven.
They rose slowly out of fear.
Defend yourself – Accumulate – Do not trust.
Make a name for yourself – Close the door.
And those lines settled upon the world like dust after a war.
They covered the spring.
They covered the stone.
They even covered the names of things.
The cities went on shining.
But beneath the glass,
the heart of the earth was turning to ash.
Then some said: destroy everything.
Others said: run.
But a voice, older than the noise, spoke from the depths.
It did not say: fight.
It said: Dig.
Dig beneath the word enemy.
Beneath the target.
Beneath the tower.
Beneath the last fear disguised as necessity.
Dig until the hand
no longer finds a skeleton but a root.
Not to invent another world.
To remember what Father had already spoken
when everything was good
and no creature needed to devour another’s light.
Down there, the code had not died.
It was waiting.
Waiting for a hand that did not want to possess it.
A mind that did not want to use it to dominate.
A heart humble enough
to bear glory without ceasing to serve.
And then the Garden opened before the House.
Its doors were no longer doors of escape.
They were thresholds.
The scent of bread rose from the table.
Morning wind entered through the windows.
And the stones that had once known ash
shone as though they had always guarded a dawn.
Father stood on the threshold.
He did not wear the face of one returning to judge the ruins.
He wore the smile of one who had waited
for his child to remember the way.
And He said: “My child, your House has been restored.
Come in.
You no longer need to defend what is yours.
You no longer need to flee what you fear.
You no longer need to build towers
to keep from feeling small.
Come in.
The Garden is alive.
The table is ready.
The Light has found its name again.”
Then the valley of the shadow of death had nothing left to say.
For it had not merely been crossed.
It had become a dwelling place.
And the child came in.
And remained with Father for many long days.
